About Me π©π»βπ»
My name's Buster. It's not my legal name, but it is the nickname my great-grandmother gave me. She chose it because I reminded her of Buster Keaton when I was a rambunctious toddler.
I'm a twenty-something and my pronouns are he/him/his.
I'm finsexual, pro-LGBTQIA+ and believe trans rights are human rights.
I'm a writer and blogger from the United Kingdom, where I live with my fiancΓ©e and our vast family of plushies. I work a full-time job by day, but by night I'm a cosy digital burrower whom tends to his modest digital garden. In my down time I like to watch 1990s anime, emulate retro games and read books. I'm a huge fan of absurdist literature and manga. My music taste is quite broad but mostly comprises of experimental ambient/electronic music. You know--Aphex Twin, Autechre, The Orb, Squarepusher and early deadmau5--that sort of thing. I also really like 80s new wave and synthpop. For some reason, around five years ago I became enamoured by Russian and Ukrainian pop music and I'm still stuck down that rabbit hole now.
I always have some sort of writing, coding or tinkering project on the go. I'm a bit of a Un*x fanatic and, therefore, somewhat of a notorious distro-hopper. At the moment I daily-drive Ubuntu and macOS, however I am a big fan of FreeBSD and OpenBSD, using them both in virtual environments and occasionally on bare-metal since late 2018. I have a very basic grasp of both the Ruby and Lua programming languages (an odd pairing I know) and, while I have coded a few fun projects in the past, my limited skills are nothing to boast about. I intend to learn both languages to at least an intermediate level. I also have a few publishing credits to my (legal) name but no New York Times bestsellers... yet.
I've been addicted to computers since I was smol and look for any excuse to spend hours on my laptop. Most of the stuff I can do is script-kiddy level stuff, Un*x system maintenance and some sysadmin type stuff. Mind you I know the difference between Little Endian and Big Endian. I think I can wrap my head around subroutines and what a hard float is. I can count in hexadecimal; flash a BIOS; run exploits on games consoles and install custom firmware; use a memory editor and write cheats. I used to write GTA:LCS cheat codes for Edison Carter's CheatDevice back in the day. I guess I know more than I realise.
I can seemingly rawdog a lot of technical stuff on intuition and RTFM alone, since I'm not the most practical person, or at least I don't think I am. I think I have quite a balanced technical and creative mind. I can think creatively and in logical, system oriented ways but I think my major pitfall is that I have some sort of an executive function issue. In order to mitigate this, I try to sharpen my logical thinking skills. I find that it helps defend me from my propensity for magical and irrational thinking. Speaking of which...
I have OCD, GAD and panic disorder diagnosed. I suspect I might have dyscalculia. Oh, and autism. I'm also very verbose and prone to oversharing. Sorry about that.
In terms of world languages, I am a native English speaker and I can speak conversational Spanish. I would really like to learn Ukrainian. I find Slavic languages especially interesting. My partner actually knows Toki Pona so I had ought to learn it too...
Politically speaking I am a Libertarian Conservative. My world view incorporates ideas of both minarchism and anarcho-capitalism, with an emphasis on personal autonomy and civil liberties. I am also a free speech absolutist. My other peculiar beliefs include cosmic materialism, philosophical nihilism and anti-natalism. I'm also one of those whiny, annoying car-free advocates, meaning I'm a certified passenger princess. In spite of this, I remain a die hard Gran Turismo fan.
I hope all of this at least gives you a bit of a flavour for what I'm like.
About buster.md
I am neither Moldavian, nor a medical doctor. I only have a paltry English Language degree! My choice of an .md domain is purely a homage to Markdown. I write everything in Markdown--from shopping lists, to journal entries, all my creative work, blog posts and even web pages, just like this one.
To put it simply, buster.md is the publicly accessible area of my digital garden: A space for my ideas, projects and reflections. At least the ones that are fit for public consumption. The site has gone through many iterations since its original inception in 2019. I've hosted it on innumerable platforms, including IPFS at one point.
My intentions for this site are to:
- Share my writing and creative projects in a clean, distraction-free format.
- Document my tech experiments, coding snippets, and Un*x adventures.
- Curate resources and thoughts on culture, philosophy, literature, and digital life.
- Keep things minimal, fast, and accessible -- with no unnecessary bloat.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you need anything, don't hesitate to contact me.
Hosting
- Hosted on tiiny.host.
- Domain name acquired from netim.com.
- Static site comprised of HTML docs generated from Markdown files for simplicity and speed.
- No trackers, no ads, no meta-data -- privacy and performance matter a lot to me.
Philosophy
This site is a reflection of my values: simplicity, openness, creativity and freedom of expression. Instead of chasing trends or algorithms, itβs about building something for myself that is authentic and sustainable.
